Speakers Bureau—Provide to companies and other organizations LWV presentations on a variety of topics, such as the history of women’s suffrage and the League, the power of the vote, the environment, building a safer, more compassionate world, and other voter and citizenship issues

Citizen Involvement

Issues

·  Collaboration with other organizations to educate citizens about foreign and domestic policies, such as Great Decisions, “The US and the UN: War and Conflict” and “Funding Our Public Schools”

· Impartial, balanced public forums on ballot issues, such as bond issues and proposed Texas constitutional amendments

· Campaign in support of an independent, bi-partisan commission for redistricting

 

Environmental concerns

· Offer workshops and forums on environmental sustainability, climate change and global warming, water and air quality, and other environmental concerns

· Study about and advocate for clean air and water

Outreach to Voters

· Special outreach efforts to new and infrequent voters—such as youth, newly-naturalized citizens, and those with special problems—providing information about the voting process and registering them to vote

· Welcome newly naturalized citizens to their new status and inform them of their rights and responsibilities

· Register voters, in particular targeting new voters and non-voting groups

Commemorations

Public Library Services

 Promote adequate library services for all Smith County residents, including

1.                   Increased collaboration among the six current libraries

2.                   Funding for all Smith County libraries comparable to the median level of the nation’s libraries

3.                 Basic public library services offered free of charge to residents, supported by a

combination of funding from governmental and private sources
